Tactical gear is only as strong as the materials it’s made of. The best gear is carefully made, extensively researched, and comprised of some of the leading military- and police-grade materials. At Vel Tye, we spend a lot of time researching exactly which materials make the best gear, from straps to fasteners to zippers.

Use our field guide to tactical gear materials to gain a better understanding of what’s on the market so you can make an informed, educated decision about your equipment.

CORDURA® Fabric: The name-to-know in high-performance tactical fabrics.

For over 45 years, CORDURA® has been innovating some of the most durable, reliable fabrics on the market. Known for toughness and strength, the brand now produces dozens of fabrics from an air-jet textured nylon to polyester. Their fabrics are used in everything from daypacks to protection vests.

VELCRO® BRAND: The original hook-and-loop fastener is still the best.

VELCRO® fasteners are utilized by military members, law enforcement officers, and general tacticians. Hook-and-loop style fasteners come in a variety of gauges (strengths) designed to hold tight and wear evenly. Among tactical gear, VELCRO® is most often used for adjustment straps, bag closures, and flexible slings for weaponry.

YUMA Fabric: Technologically-advanced waterproof materials for harsh conditions.

YUMA produces woven fabrics known for their ability to repel water. Frequently utilized for the construction of protection vests, kits and pouches, and other high-utility items, YUMA provides durability and performance without sacrificing comfort. At Vel Tye, we use ultrasonic welding to attach YUMA fabric to our soft armor panel covers and create a waterproof seal.

Kevlar® Fiber: Lightweight, durable, and incredibly strong fibrous material.

Kevlar® is a leading name in “bulletproof” vests, known for its ability to withstand direct puncture. Kevlar® Aramid Fiber is constantly being innovated by parent company, DuPont™, to become more durable, more long-lasting, and more flexible for use in a wide variety of applications.

GORE-TEX® Fabric: Laminate fabrics designed to be waterproof, windproof, and breathable.

GORE-TEX® engineered fabrics are made to be as comfortable as they are high-performing. Ideally suited to outerwear and footwear applications, GORE-TEX® products are made for withstanding the elements, particularly the effects of moisture and humidity.

What makes a material tactical? Materials aren’t inherently tactical until they’re applied to an end-product‑a vest, a jacket, a pair of gloves. For tactical gear users, no condition is too extreme. From military missions to law enforcement patrols, the safety and success of every mission depends on having the right gear.

Vel Tye works with the best-engineered materials on the market to ensure every item we sell will perform in the field. Questions about how we put our materials to work? Reach out to us today to find out more, or browse our products here.
